Go on a walking tour during Historic Calgary Week

During the 35th annual Historic Calgary Week, take some time to learn about the history of the city and what makes it the vibrant place that it is. This year’s theme is “Growing with the Flow,” taking a look at the growth and history of Southern Alberta. During the week-long event, attendees can check out 81 walking tours, talks and presentations happening throughout the city and surrounding areas.

Taste Calgary’s global cuisine at a food festival

When: July 31 to August 4

One of Calgary’s biggest and most anticipated food festivals returns over the long weekend. Taste of Calgary is your chance to sample a wide range of dishes from local restaurants, food trucks and beverage producers. There’s a huge variety of vendors including Bee The Banh Mi, Greedy Doughnut, Mumbai Bites and Village Brewery, so there’s sure to be something tasty for everyone. Use $1 tasting tickets to purchase dishes and drinks that cost two to seven tickets each.

Dine at Ryuko’s new Beltine restaurant location

Ryuko is one of the city’s best Japanese restaurants, and it recently opened its third restaurant location on July 23. At the new Beltline location, expect the same menu and similar bright, minimalist and modern decor you know and love. Stop by for sushi and sashimi, along with many modernised Japanese dishes like katsu, soba, nasu yaki (a fried eggplant dish) and more.

Watch new murals come to life during an annual mural festival

When: August 1 to 18

BUMP Festival is back and continues to transform Calgary’s buildings with giant murals created right before your eyes. This year sees 13 new murals being added to Calgary’s landscape, along with plenty of other events like street performers, the Ground Up Graffiti Jam & Block Party and the Cypher & Hiphop Showcase.

Watch experimental theatre at the Calgary Fringe Theatre Festival

When: August 1 to 9

The Calgary Fringe Theatre Festival is back. During Fringe’s nine-day run, expect a unique and unforgettable mix of online and in-person theatre performances. From autobiographical storytelling to quirky comedy shows, the festival brings independent performance to Calgary in a way that no other festival does.

Sip on a glass of wine at a new wine bar

Check out the Tour De Bowness bike race

When: August 2 to 4

A local bike race that’s been going on for 22 years, the Tour De Bowness takes place in three parts: On August 2, racers compete on an out-and-back course of varying distances on Horse Creek Road, just outside of Cochrane. The second event on August 3 is a hill climb on Mackay Road N.W., climbing Montgomery Hill. Finally, on August 4, check out the Criterium race, a fast-paced, small-circuit race that runs through Bowness. Everyone is free to line up along the sidelines to watch the action at all three races. After the Criterium race, stop by the street festival at the finish line from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with food trucks, live music, street performers and more.

Attend afternoon tea at Heritage Park

When: August 3 and 4

Head to Heritage Park this weekend for a classic afternoon tea experience. Enjoy finger sandwiches, pastries, scones and tea or lemonade at the Heritage Day Tea, then afterwards, explore the park to learn a little bit about Calgary’s history.

Eat ice cream for a good cause during YYC Ice Cream Fest

When: On now until August 17

Now in its fourth year, YYC Ice Cream Fest invites ice cream shops and eateries around the city to put forward their best ice cream creations in support of Calgary Meals on Wheels. Stop by participating businesses, then vote for your favourite sweet treat. Part of the sales from every featured dish will go towards fighting food insecurity in Calgary.

Head to the revamped Eau Claire Plaza for a Heritage Day Festival

When: August 4, 2025

Presented by Calgary Folk Arts Council, the Calgary Heritage Festival takes place this weekend at the revamped Eau Claire Plaza. From 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., check out the festivities with food vendors, cultural performances and artisans.
