The attention, care and laughter they bring to their work make everyone’s day just a little more enjoyable.

They are passionate about exceeding guests’ expectations, creating genuine and memorable experiences and sharing their deep knowledge of Calgary. This person’s warmth and expertise mean guests actively seek them out. With more than four decades spent in the hospitality industry, this person is a leader, regularly mentoring and training colleagues and inspiring trust in their team. They continue to challenge themselves to grow and learn more, with the ultimate goal of creating a welcoming space that people want to come back to again and again. 

The award recipient finds joy in serving others, and beyond their role in hospitality, they actively volunteer for several community groups.

They’ve volunteered for the Calgary Stampede for almost two decades, chairing multiple committees and sub-committees. They also help at the new Sam Centre, greeting guests and teaching them about the exhibits.

This Calgary ambassador is a member of the 783 Wing of the Royal Canadian Air Force Association, through which they help set up and keep watch over the “Field of Crosses” display each November.

They are a Make-A-Wish volunteer, help marshal and caddy at multiple charity golf tournaments and are a frequent casino volunteer. 

They also support the Century Cares program at Century Downs Racetrack and Casino and have become a true ambassador for the organization.

For their extraordinary commitment to serving others, it is a pleasure and an honour to present Cathy Torfason of Century Downs Racetrack and Casino with this year’s Doug Johnson Service Award.
