Eat, Drink and Mingle for a Cause at Pride Brunch for Camp fYrefly

by Paula Martinez

Join the Centre for Sexuality for a fabulous morning of food, drink, drag and heartfelt celebration as it hosts its annual Pride Brunch in support of Camp fYrefly Southern Alberta.

On August 30, friends, allies and community champions will gather to raise funds for Camp fYrefly, a summer camp experience for 2SLGBTQ+ youth.

What is Camp fYrefly?

Camp fYrefly Southern Alberta is a summer leadership retreat for 2SLGBTQ+ youth operated by the Centre for Sexuality.

Held at YMCA Camp Chief Hector in Kananaskis, Camp offers a transformative experience where youth can explore their identities, connect with peers and mentors and have a chance to participate in summer camp activities, all in a safe and affirming space.

This isn’t just any summer camp. The experience of a joyful space where diverse identities are understood and celebrated can be life-altering for campers and volunteers alike. “Camp is often the first place a young 2SLGBTQ+ person feels like they can be their authentic self,” says Pam Krause, president and CEO of the Centre for Sexuality.

Highlights of Camp include workshops, outdoor activities, an Artist and a Two-Spirit Elder in Residence and opportunities for community-building. Participants return home with enhanced confidence and skills to improve their communities, as well as new friends and a support network that goes beyond their time at Camp.

More than just brunch

Pride Brunch is more than just food and mimosa kits (although it has those too!). It’s a chance to make a lasting difference. Pride Brunch is the biggest fundraiser of the year for Camp fYrefly and helps ensure that no one who applies to Camp is turned away based on financial need.

Now in its 13th year, Pride Brunch offers a spectacular buffet, signature cocktails, drag entertainment, speakers from Camp and more. It is a critical fundraiser, but also a celebration of queer joy and resilience.

It’s also a meaningful way to show allyship with the 2SLGBTQ+ community. “I have been at the Centre for over 20 years,” says Krause, “and I can tell you that progress and inclusion can never be taken for granted. Hate, violence and intimidation are on the rise. Proud, visible allies to the 2SLGBTQ+ community have never been more essential.”
