Made in Calgary: Meghan MacWhirter Crafts Playful Ceramic Jewellery and Accessories

After taking a summer ceramics course, everything clicked for Meghan MacWhirter.

Originally making pom-pom earrings to sell while working through her arts degree, MacWhirter fell in love with ceramics and allowed the medium to take her jewellery in a new direction.

Since then, MacWhirter has sold her handmade ceramics as part of seasonal collections. She lets her love of ‘60s style and vintage art forms take the wheel, driving the designs of her quirky earrings, charms, small homewares, bolo ties and more. Her designs include colourful quilted patterns, farm animals and foods like tomatoes and garlic.

“I think that my personal style and my work are intrinsic to one other,” says MacWhirter, who was on Avenue’s 2025 Best Dressed list. “I create whimsical and playful pieces with a vintage touch that suits the colours and the styles of clothing I like to wear.”

When it comes to curating her collections, MacWhirter enjoys experimenting with her medium. She tries different shapes, glazes and colours until it aligns with her vision. Then, she rolls out and hand cuts her clay, underglazes fine details and adds delicate gold lustre details with a small paintbrush. Over three separate kiln firings, her pieces come to life and highlight the playful style MacWhiter emulates in her day-to-day life.

“I only create work that I would personally wear or have in my home,” says MacWhirter.
