Retro Glamour Meets Generous Hearts

by Paula Martinez

On September 20, the city sparkled with retro Palm Springs glamour as more than 400 guests gathered at the 2025 Wood’s Homes Never Give Up Gala, presented by PrairieSky Royalty Ltd., in support of building good mental health. The evening was a dazzling celebration of community, compassion and commitment to building brighter futures for children, youth and families across Alberta.

Held in the Percheron Ballroom at the new BMO Centre, the gala transported attendees to an evening oasis of mid-century elegance, complete with vibrant décor, live entertainment and a palpable spirit of generosity. The event was made possible thanks to the tireless efforts of over 30 volunteers, dedicated Wood’s Homes staff and the support of key sponsors including PrairieSky Royalty Ltd., TD Bank Group, Torys LLP, Sobeys Liquor, Petronas Canada, Cenovus Energy, Jarislowsky Fraser, Choice Contracting, Acera Insurance, Tanya Eklund Group and many more.

A night of impact and inspiration

Guests were welcomed by Wood’s Homes leadership, including Bryan Goehringer, director of Wood’s Homes Foundation, and Bjorn Johansson, CEO, alongside community champions and long-time supporters. The evening featured a heartfelt story from Holly and Max, former Wood’s Homes clients, who reminded everyone of the real impact behind every donation and the transformative services of Wood’s Homes.

Live auction highlights

The energy soared during the live auction, which featured exclusive experiences and luxury items. Some of the standout auction titles included:

  • “Pitmaster Experience with Graham Sherman” – An exclusive BBQ experience for 20 with former Top 40 Under 40 alumnus Graham Sherman.
  • “World Cup Experience” – A VIP hospitality experience at this summer’s hottest global event in Vancouver.
  • “Las Vegas & Ferraris” – A trip for four to an exclusive vantage point for the Las Vegas Grand Prix.
  • “Rockies by Rail” – A luxury Goldleaf service aboard the Rocky Mountaineer through Canada’s most scenic routes.

The bidding was lively and meaningful, and it was capped off by auctioning a special live painting by renowned artist Harvey Nichol, who shared his story of overcoming homelessness through the help of one of the Wood’s Homes programs. His painting fetched $7,000, and the funds were immediately donated to ensure future clients can benefit from the same program as he did.

Looking ahead

The gala not only raised critical funds but also reaffirmed the community’s commitment to mental health and well-being. With the support of generous donors and sponsors, Wood’s Homes continues to expand its reach and impact, ensuring that everyone has access to the care and support they need to thrive.

With more than $450,000 raised at the gala, the Calgary Flames Foundation made a surprise announcement committing $300,000 to the “Through It All” capital campaign, bringing the event to $750,000!

As the final toast was raised and the last dance played, one thing was clear: Calgary showed up with heart, style and purpose. The Never Give Up Gala was more than an event; it was a movement of hope.
