Catch a concert at the Canmore Folk Festival

When: August 2 to 4

Alberta’s longest-running folk festival returns for another year of incredible performances. The Canmore Folk Festival hosts more than 30 artists at its outdoor event in Centennial Park and an additional off-site location at the Stage 4 Pub at Canmore Miners’ Union Hall. This year’s lineup includes artists like Dominique Fils-Aimé, Al Simmons, Lloyd Spiegel and more. Bringing tarps, blankets and chairs is encouraged for comfortable listening all day. You can also head to the park a day early on August 1 as the festival also hosts a free community concert day before the formal festivities begin.

Listen to great music at an Invermere block party

When: August 3

There’s a rockin’ block party in Invermere this month. The Rock the Block party hosts high-energy performances from Hotel California, Five Alarm Funk and Trooper. The party takes place along 13th Street in Invermere, where attendees can jam out to iconic rock tunes while enjoying beverages and bites from food trucks. For the best listening experience, make sure to bring your own lawn chairs to the outdoor party.

Take part in Loop the Lake in Invermere

When: August 9

At the 28th annual Loop the Lake, attendees can enjoy a scenic run in Invermere. Runners can register for a five-kilometre, 10-kilometre or half-marathon race course. The races start at the College of the Rockies and take runners along the beautiful Westside Legacy Trail. Break a sweat while supporting a good cause, with a portion of marathon proceeds going to the Colombia Valley Food Bank.

Tee off at a golf tournament in Canmore

When: August 11

This month marks the Alberta Adolescent Recovery Centre’s 26th Annual Tournament of Miracles. Proceeds from the golf event will go towards supporting Alberta youth, families and communities affected by substance abuse. Participants can expect to play in a variety of golf matches and skill contests at the Silvertip Golf Resort in Canmore. The event includes a silent auction, door prizes, a full breakfast, lunch, dinner and more.

Enjoy classical music at an international string quartet competition in Banff

When: August 25 to 31

Some of the world’s best string quartets head to Banff this month for the Banff International String Quartet Competition. At the week-long event, watch and listen to 10 emerging string quartets compete in multiple performances to win $500,000 in cash, prizes and career opportunities. Guests can expect incredible classical music performances from musicians from Seoul, Paris, Berlin and more.

Spend the day at a Scottish sporting and cultural event

When: August 30 to 31

Celebrate Scottish culture in the Rockies at the Canmore Highland Games. With traditional pipe bands, highland dancing, heavy sports competitions and whisky tastings, the lively weekend event offers something for everyone. Guests can also expect festivities like tug of war competitions, a beer garden, a pancake breakfast, live music and more. Tickets are available online.

Watch immersive short films in a 360-degree projection cinema dome

When: Thursdays to Saturdays until August 31

Visit The Whyte museum in Banff for an extraordinary immersive film experience running until August 31. Attendees can watch captivating short films at The Dome, the museum’s 360-degree projection cinema dome. The Dome is showing a children’s program, a short film that pays tribute to a Pink Floyd album and its experimental art program that features four visually striking short films from avant-garde filmmakers. The three programs run every Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
