Fairmont Banff Springs, Indigenous Tourism Alberta and ​​Mini Hrpa, an Indigenous cultural centre in Banff, have teamed up to host the Indigenous Marketplace. The event includes crafting sessions, live music, a Mini Hrpa interactive cultural display, a children’s book reading and more. Vendors will be selling traditional crafts, fashion and more. The market is open to the public and crafting workshops are open on a first-come, first-served basis. It all takes place at the Fairmont Banff Springs’ Mt. Stephen Hall.

Celebrate National Indigenous History Month in Banff

June is National Indigenous History Month and there are a wide variety of activities at the Banff Centre to mark the occasion. Participate in creative events and activities like learning how to create fox fur earrings in a workshop on June 11, watching an online film screening available June 21 to 27, or attending panel discussions, lectures and exhibit receptions. Some events and activities are free and require registration, and some require paid tickets.

Ride the summer gondola in Lake Louise

When: Opens June 6

Starting this month, you can ride up 2,101 metres (6,893 feet) on the summer gondola at the Lake Louise Ski Resort. The ride provides an opportunity to see stunning landscapes of mountains, glaciers, wildflowers and wildlife. Make it a day trip by pre-purchasing a shuttle ride to Moraine Lake or the Lake Louise lakeshore, dining on one of the outdoor patios at the resort or even hitting up a nearby hiking trail.

Walk or cycle through Canmore’s pedestrian-friendly Main Street


Canmore’s pedestrian zone is back this summer on Main Street (8th Street). The street will be vehicle-free until October 17, creating a cycling and pedestrian-friendly way to explore this mountain town and its businesses like cafĆ©s and restaurants, art galleries and shops.

Visit two new art exhibitions in Canmore

When: The Past/Futures show runs from June 7 to July 5; Studio Energy Gallery opens June 7

Canmore’s Elevation Gallery is opening two new shows this month that coincide with the upcoming G7 leaders’ summit in Kananaskis and feature related themes. Canmore-based artist Pascale Ouellet’s new series, Past/Futures, is a collection of large-scale paintings that provide a statement on tourism and ask how we can responsibly celebrate beautiful destinations without destroying them. It runs from June 7 to July 5.

Also opening on June 7 is the new ā€œStudio Energy Galleryā€ by economist, author and photographer Peter Tertzakian. The gallery will feature Tertzakian’s works, including a curated opening show on the themes of persistence, obsolescence and renewal, as well as installations and 2D works from artists that Tertzakian will work with to translate his policy work into art.

Shop at a summer market in Banff or Canmore

When: Banff Farmers Market runs from May 21 to October 1 on Wednesdays; Canmore Mountain Market runs from May 22 to October 2 on Thursdays

Local shoppers can rejoice because two mountain markets have returned for the summer season. The Banff Farmers Market, which runs every Wednesday at Central Park until October 1, has regionally produced artisan foods, beauty and apparel products, pottery and handcrafted goods, artwork, produce, jewellery and more. There’s also the Canmore Mountain Market, which has been running for more than 25 years and takes place every Thursday at Elevation Place until October 2. There, you’ll find both regional and local produce, meats and baked goods, crafts, clothing and more.

Watch a new musical inspired by Anne of Green Gables

When: June 12 to August 31

This new all-ages comedic musical brings a fresh spin to the story of Anne of Green Gables. Fans of Anne can expect a high-energy performance featuring four actors playing dozens of roles and instruments. The show has an ā€œEast coast flairā€ with maritime music, including fiddles.
